COMPLETE COMREHENSION UNIT STRUCTURE: Each unit is divided into five or six sections, with questions designed to help students respond to texts on many levels:
- On the surface: These are basic literal questions. Students should be able to find the answer clearly in the written text.
- Discoveries: These are questioins about the purpose, structure and features of the text. Students will need to focus on the intended audience, the language used and the way the text has been constructed.
- Delving more deeply: These are inferential or interpretive questions. Students will have to use their own knowledge and thinking, as well as information from the text to answer questions in this section.
- Hidden depths: These are creative, critical or higher-order-thinking questions. Students will need to respond to this section as individuals and be prepared to justify their response.
- Down to you: These questions (featured in books A and B only) require visual, graphica nd reflective answers.
- Extend yourself: These are more open-ended questions. They provide a range of opportunities for students to respond to the text at a deeper level by writing, viewing, listening and speaking.
