Nelson Maths Building Mental Strategies Skill Books are four write-in skill books specifically written for NSW students in Years 3 to 6. The Skill Books support the NSW Syllabus learning and development of mental strategies in the areas of counting, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

EACH MENTAL STRATEGY IS DEVELOPED OVER THREE SECTIONS:

Section 1 – Focus: Introduces the focus of the lesson and explains step-by-step the mental strategy being developed. The tasks and activities in this section provide an opportunity for students to practice and perfect the strategy.

Section 2 – Taking it Further: Activities designed to take the strategy further. These can be completed by more advanced students independently during class time, set as homework, or used in a guided lesson format with a focus group.

Section 3 – Solve the Problem: Provides students with an opportunity to use the strategy in a different context. The problems extend across the Dimensions – Number; Measurement, Chance and Data; Space; Structure; Working Mathematically – into real-life applications.
